AWS European Sovereign Cloud: beSharp is a Launch Partner

Today, January 15, 2026, AWS officially announced the launch of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, the new independent Sovereign Cloud for Europe. The first Region is now operational in Brandenburg, Germany, and beSharp is a launch partner for this initiative.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud represents a structural response to the growing needs for digital sovereignty, operational control, and regulatory compliance within the European market. It is specifically designed for organizations in Public Administration, healthcare, the financial sector, and all industries subject to stringent regulatory requirements.

What is the AWS European Sovereign Cloud?

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a completely autonomous cloud infrastructure, physically and logically separated from existing AWS Regions. It is not an extension of current infrastructures, but an independent cloud built specifically to meet European sovereignty requirements.

Key Features:

• Full EU Localization: The entire infrastructure—data centers, storage, networking—operates exclusively within EU borders.
• Autonomous Operational Management: The cloud is operated exclusively by EU residents.
• Independent Governance: A dedicated corporate structure under German law, led by Managing Directors Stéphane Israël and Stefan Hoechbauer, supported by an advisory board of European citizens, including two independent representatives.
• Dedicated Security Operations Center: A specific security center to ensure the highest protection standards.
• Extended AWS Service Portfolio: Over 90 services available at launch, including compute, storage, database, networking, security, and AI services such as Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Q, and Amazon SageMaker.

The infrastructure is designed to operate continuously even in the event of connectivity disruptions with other Regions, ensuring true operational autonomy. In extreme circumstances, authorized AWS European Sovereign Cloud employees (EU residents) will have independent access to a replica of the source code necessary to keep services operational.
